Building on a Solid Foundation

Why is it that so many Christians are falling away from the Faith?

Why is it that so many Christians look, act and think just like non-Christians?

The answer to these questions I believe can be traced back to the foundations of many a Christian’s faith.

A Simple Faith

When I was first saved at the age of 17 I was a blank slate. I didn’t know anything about Christianity and I had no preconceived ideas about its rules or traditions. I came from an atheistic family and all I really knew about Jesus was what I had been taught in religious studies class at school.

One blessing that God bestowed on me upon being saved was that he made what had always seemed a big, boring book with really thin paper and tiny writing become to me the most exciting, enthralling and gripping piece of literature I had ever read. That said, at 17 years old, before I became a Christian, I didn’t really like reading much anyway!

At salvation God blessed me with a very simple yet eternally important revelation and I would encourage anybody reading this to make this revelation a foundational building block of their faith as well. The revelation was this:

“Jesus Christ is who he said he is and the Bible is God’s Word for all mankind.

This foundational revelation leads naturally to a very important question.

Who did Jesus of Nazareth say he was?

I am sure that at this point many of you Christians are thinking, “well… that’s easy, the answer is – GOD”. Now, whilst I wholeheartedly agree with this response, being a Christian myself, this is where we start the answer, not where we sit down in our comfy armchair and relax, happily thinking we have answered the question adequately.

What is not immediately evident with this revelation and the questions that naturally follow is the fact that everything hinges on the Bible. The Bible claims to be God’s Word to man, perfect, trustworthy and totally sufficient to meet every need of the human soul (2 Tim 3:15-17, Jude 3, John 5:39, Psalm 19:7-14). Everything that the LORD wants us to know about Jesus and living the God-pleasing life is found in the Bible alone.

The Bible, Just a Dusty Old Book!

One day early on in my Christian walk, when I got to the part in the Bible where it says that Christians should, “not forsake the fellowshipping together” I decided I needed to find a church to fellowship with other Christians.

On my many outings to different and diverse churches I got the chance to talk to many different Christians. I was amazed at how many Christians held the view of the Bible that I had held before I was saved. Namely, that the Bible was just a dusty old book with small print and thin pages. I couldn’t believe that Christians could say this about the Bible – God’s message to mankind, the book which tells them everything they would ever need to know on this earth about their Lord, Saviour, King, and the Creator of the Universe – Jesus the Messiah.

With 20 years of hindsight I can say now that this naiveté on my part was due to having never come into contact with one of the most insidious and deadly enemies with which followers of Christ have to content in our generation, Christian Liberalism. For the purposes of this article, let’s just say I mean those who believe and teach that the Bible is just like any other book, written solely by men, many of whom were not even educated, and none of whom had the understanding that today’s intellectuals possess. The Bible in their opinion, is therefore full of errors and is in the end lacking in any authority over man whatsoever.

An even more subtle strain of this deadly virus known as Liberal Christianity denies that the Bible is the Word of God but affirms that the Bible contains the word of God. This second strain is often academically more appealing than the first strain’s denial of God having any part in the writing of the Bible whatsoever, and it gives the proverbial head nod to the fact that God could write down special revelation to man if he wanted to.

Let’s not be deceived, both strains mentioned above are just as deadly as each other as they leave it in the hands of man to decide what God has said and what he hasn’t.

Religious Indifference

“Nothing is so fatal to religion as indifference, which is, at least, half infidelity.” -Edmund Burke

As I see it, the second major enemy for followers of Christ in our day is Christian apathy. In today’s modern society we expect everything that we need to be at our fingertips or at least a button’s click away. If you can’t get it brought to you from your comfy spot in your favourite armchair, then it’s probably not worth having anyway.

The preponderance of modern man’s musings about the nature of the universe and the meaning of life goes no further than asking Siri or Cortana, or for those who are really philosophically inclined, going directly to Wikipedia. In today’s society knowledge, wisdom and morality are out. Football, television and the pub are in.

When Christians start to care more about football, television and the pub than they care about the knowledge of God, wisdom and morality, you can be sure that the church is on very thin ice. Our culture suffocates us with these banalities but as Christians, we  must cultivate other more godly priorities in our lives lest we become like the church of Laodicea mentioned by the apostle John in Revelation.

“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.” -Revelation 3:15

The two enemies of Christianity mentioned above often work together to shipwreck the faith of immature Christians. In my experience, it is almost always the case that when a Christian starts to believe the chaff of liberal Christianity they start to walk down a road whose first stop is apathy and whose final destination is atheism.

If you have started to walk down this road, I urge you in the strongest possible terms to turn back. Reconsider your beliefs about the Bible, and understand that without the Bible as the infallible, inerrant written Word of God you have no sure foundation upon which to build your faith.

It may not happen straightaway but sooner or later your faith, beaten down by every wind of secular doctrine that passes, will eventually crumble to nothing.

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.” -Matthew 7:26

If you embrace liberal views of the Bible then you are worse than the foolish man mentioned above because not only do you not act on the words of Jesus (apathy) but you cannot even hear the words of Jesus.

Liberal Christianity can never have any conviction in the teachings of Christ since it cannot agree what Jesus actually taught. Liberal Christianity does not reject the Bible as God’s Word because of historical evidence, it rejects the Bible because it objects to the teachings found within the Bibles pages.

No serious Christian can object to the teachings of Christ and still call themselves Christian.
