“Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
Western nations have flourished most when they have adopted the Judeo-Christian belief of individual accountability before God.
When the individuals that make up society believe that their every action and thought will be judged by God they are infinitely more likely to behave in a way that is conducive to good – and not just good for themselves but also good for their fellow man.
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40
Getting Rid of God But Keeping His Things
When society is replete with Christians who are living lives according to God’s Word and God’s principles summarised above, the result will be a prosperous and free society that possesses and exhibits the material as well as the spiritual blessings of God.
“If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God…” Deuteronomy 28:1-14
Secularism denies that our lives are under the sovereignty of the almighty God and clings to random chance as its god. Random chance doesn’t judge our behaviour and doesn’t require our obedience.
With random chance as the creator of the universe secularists try to convince themselves that they are free. In order to help them live out their delusion they seek to remove any thought or acknowledgement of God from public life.
What secularists can never escape from however, is that God has set the world up in such a way that blessings such as life, liberty and happiness all flow from belief and obedience to Him. Without Him there can be no fulfilled life, no true happiness and no true freedom.
It has often been said that there is a God-shaped hole in every person that can never be filled by any earthly pleasure or philosophy. Even hardened atheists will admit that life without a spiritual dimension becomes empty, and the material indulgences of the world lose their shine and appeal with time.
There is No Spiritual Third Way
“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” Matthew 12:30
Jesus makes it very clear that there are only two ways, He is one way (John 14:6) and the other is the way that “seemeth right unto [atheistic] man” (Proverbs 14:12), but leads to desolation.
Secularists believe they can forge a “Third Way” that brings God’s material blessings without bending the knee to God.
Throughout history, economic and individual FREEDOM have proved to be the bedrock of wealth, prosperity and happiness for the masses. The reason secularism will eventually always fail is because without God there can never be true freedom.
The reason for this is that the Creator of the Universe equates freedom with wilful submission to Him (John 8:36, 2 Corinthians 3:17, Galatians 5:1, Galatians 5:13, Psalm 119:45, Romans 6:22).
“The whole world is the prisoner of sin.” Galatians 3:22
The dirty little secret of all hard-core secularists is that they understand that their rejection of God is also a rejection of true freedom.
Without an omnipotent God who watches and keeps account of every deed, men will let their carnal natures run amok, which will in turn destroy civilized society and the freedom that civilization affords. When God is rejected, every man does “what is right in his own eyes” (Judges 17:6).
Hard-core secularists know this and the only answer they have to the ensuing social and moral anarchy (because of their wilful suppression of the knowledge of God) is a quasi-omnipotent, quasi-omniscient government to beat the carnal nature of man into submission to the arbitrary morality of a ruling elite.
There is No Political Third Way
Just as there is no spiritual “Third Way”, neither is there a political “Third Way”.
During the Tony Blair era of British politics it was very fashionable in political and economic circles to talk about “a Third Way”. The idea was that capitalism and socialism could be merged to form a new economic system that would supposedly take the best of both systems.
Tony Blair was an excellent orator and a master of spin-doctoring. Give him a platform, a liberal/leftist mass media, and he could sell snow to the Eskimos.
As it happens he was not in the market to sell snow, but rather his substantial oratory skills were focused on dressing socialism in capitalist garb and selling it to the politically undiscerning British public. This was his “Third Way”.
Sadly, no matter how “free” market Tony Blair’s Third Way looked its secular roots would never let it be anything but dressed-up, temporarily watered-down, socialism.
The inconvenient truth for socialists the world over is that history amply demonstrates that any country that adopts socialism (no matter how well disguised) sets itself on a path to political and economic ruin, impoverishing its populace and corrupting its democracy.
The end game for all socialist regimes is a small ruling elite of wealthy people with the rest of the populace forced into indentured servitude.
Just as the spiritual Third Way was wishful thinking on the part of atheists and secularists, the political Third Way is more of the same.
With some new clothes and some magical sleight of hand socialism has managed to rebrand itself thereby distancing itself from its horrible track record and start anew.
Life without God will always lead to the servitude of the masses to the strongest and fiercest of tyrants. Nietzsche was one of the few atheists who acknowledged this truth.
Changing the Beast’s Name Does Not Change Its Nature.
Progressives, leftists and liberals never grow tired of the name game, and normal, everyday folk keep buying it.
Slavery Over Freedom is Foolishness
Capitalism, in stark contrast to socialism, has proven itself historically to be the most successful vehicle for individual freedom, wealth and prosperity for the vast majority of the populace who live under it.
For this reason you would think that informed, PROPERLY educated democracies would never willingly choose socialism over capitalism. However, history shows this not to be the case.
Ignoring for the moment the issue of liberal/leftist propaganda in media and education, why then do free nations keep adopting socialism?
Sin Is Stronger Than Reason
To fallen man the desire to be rid of the perceived shackles of our Creator is far, far greater than the desire to see other people prosperous and flourishing. The Bible reminds us that man’s “heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jeremiah 17:9).
After decades of secularist propaganda campaigns “re-educating” the majority of the population to believe there is no God, there becomes no over-arching, universal standard by which to judge good and evil. All that remains is arbitrary opinion, a show of hands, or under socialism, all pervasive government!
Once we start to view the world through a Christian worldview it is far easier to see why time and time again free nations adopt the poverty inducing, freedom destroying system of socialism.
Mankind’s desire to rebel against God is far stronger than his rational nature to see wealth and prosperity abound.
Secularists fail to draw the correct conclusions about government and economics despite all the evidence, because they will not allow God into their deficient worldview.
To the secularist there seems no answer to the question as to why capitalism works so well sometimes, but other times it quickly turns into crony-capitalism and then finally into full-blooded socialism/totalitarian rule.
“…there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” Romans 13:1
The LORD GOD Almighty Reigns
The answer to the secularist dilemma is that God rules the affairs of men, blessing Godliness and punishing wickedness. It is not the system in itself that brings prosperity or poverty, but rather the spiritual state of the nation in question.
Secularism can never understand this and can therefore only ever pave the way to some form of totalitarian servitude.
It is God who brings prosperity to a nation not capitalism.
Our God is a patient, long-suffering and merciful God who will stay His hand of judgement for as long as possible. He waits and He waits, hoping for national repentance, but if no repentance comes, His judgement will surely follow.
One need only look through the pages of the Old Testament to see that when Israel followed God they were blessed with freedom, wealth and prosperity, but when they rebelled, they became impoverished and finally enslaved at the hands of autocratic despots.
It is not a return to capitalism that will save the West but a return to the God of our fore-fathers through our LORD Jesus Christ.
